Fairytale continues as Clyda hold on against Naomh Abhan
By Michael Ellard

Clyda Rovers.2-9
Naomh Abhanâ€....0-14

CLYDA ROVERS the surprise packet of the millennium year’s competition
Maintained their Cinderella-like existence in the Permanent TSB Cork SFC with another fairytale victory over Naomh Abhan at Kanturk on Saturday.

An exemplary first-half performance including goals from centre-forward Dylan O Shea and left-half forward Paudie Kissane paved the way for Clyda’s exciting one-point win.

But Naomh Abhan inspired by the accurate shooting of captain Miceal O Croinin staged a second-half revival and came close to winning.

Clyda were in rampant form in the opening sequences. O’Shea kicked 3 early points, 1 a massive effort from a long distance free as a very focused Clyda team raced into a 6 -2 lead. In the 17th minute o shea ran on to a pass from midfielder Fergal Dorgan and gave goalkeeper Denis Dineen no chance with a cracking drive to the corner of the net.

O Cronin kicked 3 points from frees but kissanes goal in the 30th minute powered Clyda into an interval lead of 2-7 to 0-5.

When Kissane scored his third point in 8 minutes to extend Clyda’s lead to 9 points, it appeared to be all over.

However Clyda lost their way O Croinin kicked 5 points on the trot, from both play and frees. Donal Cronin added another and Naomh Abhan were just 3 behind with 9 minutes remaining.

Clyda briefly lifted the siege with a point from Dorgan in the 56th minute but Naomh Abhan then brought it down to the bare minimum .But despite 5 minutes of injury time being played time ran out and Clyda held on for a famous win.

More committed Clyda Rovers surprise favourites Carbery
Southern Star

Carbery, a team drawn from the football stronghold that is West Cork, made a very tame exit from the Permanent TSB Cork County senior football championship when they gave best to Clyda Rovers from Mourne Abbey in Cloughduv on Sunday evening last at the third round stage. Clyda had re-entered the competition through the losers group after suffering a first round defeat by Douglas and took their opportunity by getting the better of Youghal in the second round.

They entered last Sunday as game as outsiders but they had one commodity which the divisional side did not possess and that was a fierce will to win which was the real difference between the teams in the final analysis.

They contested every ball with a passion their opponents could not match, more willing to run themselves to a standstill all over the pitch and the intensity of the players on the field was matched by their mentors on the line and their supporters on the bank. Their victory was greeted by scenes of delight more akin to county final triumphs and undoubtedly the North Cork men fully deserved their hour of glory which was a just reward for their total commitment.

Conditions for the game at Cloughduv were excellent with the pitch in beautiful condition and little enough wind. The early exchanges were inconclusive with each side swapping points on two occasions and shooting nine wides almost spent evenly between them and when Pat Hegarty equalised for Carbery in the 21st minute the score was only 0-2 each.

Fergal Dorgan had opened the Clyda tally in the 2nd minute, Bandons John O Regan equalised. Soon after the Clyda Rovers corner back Thomas Walsh retired through injury forcing them to rearrange their defence and to introduce Dylan O'Shea, a son of centre back Mick O'Shea into attack a substitution which was to have a very important bearing on the ultimate result.

Niall Mullane put Clyda back in front in the 12th minute and there was a series of wides at both ends before Hegartys equaliser in the 21st minute. The game turned Clyda's way soon after when Paul Holland put them back in front from play, then landed a point from a free over from 55 metres out and added his third point from the kick out, set up by Fergal Dorgan.

Brian O'Sullivan from Ilen Rovers, the only man from the club on the starting line out, pointed a free for Carbery five minutes from the interval and John O'Regan had his second point from play to reduce the deficit to the minimum. In the dying minutes of the half, Paudie Kissane, Padraig Mullane and Mullane again sent over Clyda points to leave the club team with a tidy lead at the interval 0-8 to 0-4. The question at this stage was would Clyda's spirit and work rate survive against the more methodical classical style of the West Cork men.

The story of the second half is dominated by the phenomal long range shooting from placed ball of the Clyda substitute Dylan O'Shea. In the 33rd minute he landed a free from 50 metres on top of the Carbery net and when two minutes later Paudie Kissane's strong run up the right wing ended with a 45 being conceded, the young O'Shea sent the free straight between the posts once again to open up a five point gap and increase the Clyda resolve to hold on to their lead.

Carbery, aware that the game could slip away from them introduced Fachtna Collins and his Ilen clubmate Kevin O'Sullivan and their fortunes improved almost immediately and it took a goal line save by Clyda's Derry Cronin to keep Pat Hegartys close range effort from hitting the net, the ball being diverted over the bar to Clydas relief. At the three quarter stage points were exchanged between Fergal Dorgan and Michael O Sullivan and the next point came from Paul Holland who availed of a defence splitting cross field ball from Tadhg O Callaghan.

Carbery hit a purple patch starting with Brian O Sullivans point in the 50th minute which was followed by a brace from Fachtna Collins to leave only three points between the teams with eight minutes play remaining. However Carbery never seemed to raise themselves out of their casual style and three wides in a row did nothing to help them either and in an isolated attack Clya again earned a 45 which led to another similar award and on the second attempt Dylan O Shea sent the ball sailing between the uprights to open up a four point lead with as many minutes remaining.

There was really only going to be one winner at this stage and after Tadhg Deasy landed a Carbery point Dylan O Shea landed his fourth long range free to the delight of the Clyda supporters. The final whistle followed and the laurels rested with those who most deserved them but really Carbery wont be too happy with this particular display.

Hard working Clyda just possessed too much determination for a Carbery team with talented players but which was too lackadaisical for this particular contest.

Clyda Rovers deserved their victory

Clyda Rovers 0-10 Youghal 0-8
By Brendan Larkin
CLYDA ROVERS bounced back from a first round defeat, to reach round three of the Permanent TSB county SFC with this two-point win over Youghal in Fermoy on Saturday. The Mourneabbey side deserved their victory, but made extremely hard work of it, kicking 14 wides in a game that had few highlights.

But what the game lacked in terms of skill, was more than made up for with excitement as Clyda were forced to defend bravely in the closing minutes before ensuring their name is in tomorrow nights draw.

Not for the first time Clyda were grateful for the craft and experience of full back Brendan Walsh and centre back Mick O Shea.

Both have given tremendous service to the Rovers and played major roles for their side. Long serving Derry Cronin, Cormac O Sullivan, Fergal Dorgan and Paudie Kissane also did well for the winners.

Youghal scorched into the lead after 15 minutes, but lost their way in the second half as Clydas aggressive play and finish proved decisive.

The East Cork side contributed to their own downfall by pumping the ball into the Clyda square where Brendan Walsh was rarely beaten.

In that opening moiety corner forward Paul Moylan tormented the Clyda defence with his pace and excellent control of the greasy ball. He contributed three of those early four points, and he might of had a goal just before the break had he kept his shot just a couple of inches lower.

Clyda were tentative in the opening quarter but a gradual improvement in midfield saw them take control for the remainder of the half and they went in a point in arrears.

The North Cork side increased the tempo on the change over, and after the sides were level for the fourth time at 0-6 a piece, they took a firm grip on the game with four unanswered points, two of them by the impressive Cormac O Sullivan, to lead by the end of the third quarter.

Despite Clydas dominance Youghal created several chances, principally Micky Walsh and Eoin Coleman, but they could make no headway against the defence where Walsh and O Shea were superb.

With eight minutes to go the Seasiders had the deficit down to two points, but while neither side added to their tally, the keeness of the exchanges kept the crowd entertained.

Scorers - Clyda: P. Kissane 0-4; F. Dorgan, C. O Sullivan 0-2 each; P. Holland (free), N. O Mullane 0-1 each. Youghal: P. Moylan 0-5 (0-1 free); A. Healy, E. Coleman, S. Forrest 0-1 each.

CLYDA ROVERS: D. Fitzgerald; T. Walsh, B. Walsh, A. Carey; T. O Callaghan, M. O Shea, D. Cronin; C. OSullivan, F. Dorgan; P. Kissane, N. O Mullane, P. Holland; P. O Mullane, D. Murphy, J. Walsh. Subs. G. Carey for O Callaghan;K. Cronin for Murphy; T. Mullane for J. Walsh.

By Frank Fitzpatrick P.R.O
ON Sunday, January 20, Clyda Rovers Senior football team, played the first game of their new season in
the Munster Senior football league, against their old rivals, Aghada in Mourneabbey. The pitch was
excellently lined and prepared, thanks to Don McEvoy and his ground team. A huge attendance waited in
anticipation of the referees whistle to commence the game.
On a very pleasant Sunday afternoon, both teams took to the pitch, which had a good coating of grass,
even though conditions underfoot were heavy. Match referee was Killavullens Noel Brosnan, Clyda
Rovers coach, Mick Doyle, Clyda Rovers selectors, Timmy O'Callaghan and Brendan Kelleher.

On the referees whistle, a very intense game of football commenced. Clyda Rovers first score came from the boot of Paul Holland from a very well executed free after a foul on Mourneabbeys Padraig O Mullane.
In the 11th minute, Paudie Kissane scored Clydas 2nd score, after a foul on Johnny Walsh. At the end of
the first quarter, following a tremendous 15 minutes of football from both teams Clyda Rovers were
leading on a score line of 0-2 to Aghadas 0-0. In the 17th minute, Dermot Fitzgerald pulled off a point blank save from Aghada's wing forward, which resulted in a free for Clyda Rovers, when Dermot
Fitzgerald was fouled on his way out with the ball. Cormac O'Sullivan scored Clyda Rovers next point from play in the 18th minute. Aghada's first score
came in the 21st minute, and Clyda Rovers next score came in the 23rd minute from the boot of Paudie
Kissane, after a foul on Fergal Dorgan. In the 25th minute, Paudie Kissane scored a further point from
play.

With our back line playing great, defensively throughout the first half, and our mid field pairing of Cormac O'Sullivan and Paudie Kissane playing exceptionally well in mid field.

The half time score was Clyda Rovers leading on a scoreline of 0-5 to Aghada's 0-1. On the resumption
Aghada were fist to score n the 30th and half minute of the 2nd half, with a further point for Aghada in the 32nd minute. Clyda Rovers next score came in the 34th minute, with some great passing movementsfrom the defence all the way up to Johnny Walsh, which was passed on to Dylan O'Shea and a
tremendous finish by Fergal Dorgan. Aghada scored two further points in the 48th and 56th minutes.
With some great defensive work by Clyda Rovers, back line kept Aghada at bay for the last quarter. In the dying minute, Aghada levelled the game to leave the final score, Clyda Rovers 0-6, Aghada 0-6.

Clyda Rovers beaten by St Finbarrs in Munster SL
Frank Fitzpatrick PRO
ON Sunday last, February 7, Clyda Rovers experienced their first defeat when they played their third game in the Munster SL competition. On this occasion, Clyda Rovers played St Finbarrs in Mourneabbey.
In the first half, Clyda Rovers were first to score when Johnny Walsh pointed from play in the third minute. A further point from the boot of Paul Holland when he pointed a free in the fifth minute. Tadgh O'Mullane tested the St Finbarrs keeper in the sixth minute.
St Finbarrs scored the next three points. And in the 17th minute, Clyda Rovers levelled the score at Clyda 0-3 to St Finbarrs 0-3, when Derek O'Brien pointed from a free.
In the 20th minute Paul Holland put Clyda Rovers in the lead after a nice back heel from a free kick. St Finbarrs scored the next two points and in the 29th minute, Tadgh O'Mullane gave a great pass to Derek O'Brien who was blatantly pulled to the ground by St Finbarrs corner back. Derek took the free kick and levelled the game. The score at half time was Clyda Rovers 0-6, St Finbarrs 0-6.

In the second half, St Finbarrs stepped up the pace of the game and scored a further five points. Clyda Rovers only score of this half came in the 46th minute after a foul was awarded to Padraig O'Mullane and Paul Holland converted this 40m free. The full time score was St Finbarrs 0-12, Clyda Rovers 0-7.
As an observer, I am concerned why some referees expect to successfully referee a match without a full contingent of his umpires and lines-men. It is vital, more especially at senior level where players have to put in a tremendous effort to play at this level. The players deserve to be treated with respect, just as referees expect respect from players and team officials.

In my view, it is all part of fair play for a referee to have his own umpires and lines-men in position at all games to settle any instances that could arise during the game.

Team: D Fitzgerald, T Walsh, B Walsh, A Carey, G Carey, M O'Shea, D Cronin, C O'Sullivan, D O'Brien, P O'Mullane, P Holland, N O'Mullane, T O'Mullane, J Walsh.

Subs: K Cronin, T O'Callaghan, D O'Mullane.

Scorers: P Holland (0-4), D O'Brien (0-2), J Walsh (0-1).

Clyda captain Padraig O Mullane before the 4th Round Game against Carbery

Clyda Rovers 2-8
Kilworth 0-14

In an exciting JAHC game at Ballyhooly Kilworth and Clyda Rovers finished level after a brillant gane of Hurling.

Kilworth were leading 0-14 to 0-8 by the 55th minute but two late goals for Clyda Rovers by Fergal Dorgan and James Graham had the sides level

The opening quater was very close with the sides level at 3 points a peice.
Clyda Rovers came more into the game with Dave Murphy, John O Hanlon and James Graham all very impressive and in the 22nd minute a great movement by the O’Mullane brothers and James Graham lead to a fergal Dorgan point

Padraig O Mullane and Chris O’Sullivan both added a point each for Clyda before the break to leave the scores at 6-3 in clydas favour.

Clyda started well on the changeover. Padraig O’Mullane had an early point and in the 34th minute a long ball out of defence by Dave Murphy led to a great movement by Mossie O’Brien Donal O”Mullane and Tadgh Callaghan which resulted in a point by Chris Sullivan and it looked like there was an upset on the cards.

However Kilworth hit a purple patch and a series of points had the side’s level by the 44th minute at 0-8 each.

Kilworth toke full control until the 53rd minute with 6 unanswered points. However Clyda never gave up and in the 55th minute Fergal Dorgan got a wonderful goal to bring the lead down to 3 points. Clyda Rovers battled hard for the equalizing goal and in the 58th minute a long free by Niall O’Mullane found danger man Graham who kicked to the net to force the sides level. Both sides tried hard for the winner but time ran out and a draw was a fair result.
