HERE IS THE YEAR 2001 IN REVIEW.

BANTRY BEAT CLYDA ROVERS

CLYDA ROVERS .........................0-15
BANTRY BLUES .........................1-13

By Brendan Larkin
AFTER the disappointment of the county senior team in this year’s championship, Cork needed a good football match to get the game back on track and they certainly got it in this rousing TSB SFC tie at Páirc Uí Rinn yesterday.
Bantry had to pull out all the stops to get the better of a dogged Clyda Rovers who deserved something out of the game, if only for their refusal to lie down after the West Cork side stormed into a five point lead with 12 minutes to go playing against the wind.
This was a marvellous contest played with tremendous passion and no little skill. Unfortunately for the Blues their victory was at enormous expense as they lost centre back Andy O’Shea with a suspected broken leg late in the first half which will keep him out of action for the rest of the season.
Yet again Damien O’Neill was hugely influential at midfield, where he got tremendous assistance from Graham Canty. It would be fair to say in the high fielding stakes Canty outshone O’Neill for once.
Up front the excellent free taking by Jeremy Canty was crucial to the Blues win while Philip Clifford showed a greater appetite for work and took his goal as only he can, racing clear before unleashing a powerful kick into the roof of the Clyda net after 18 minutes.

Timmy O’Mahony, Padraig O’Regan, Niall Twomey and Eric Sheehan also make big contributions to Bantry’s victory, which unfortunately for them was overshadowed by the injury to their centre back Andy O’Shea. Clyda will be disappointed at not getting a draw at least from this contest.

Twice they found themselves four points in arrears but, renowned for their battling qualities, they pulled that deficit down only for time to eventually run out on them.

Indeed their sheer persistence looked to have earned them what would have been a shock result when full back Brendan Walsh, fisted home Paul Holland’s cross but he was adjudged to be in the square before the ball came and the goal was rightly disallowed.

However, the Mourneabbey side lost no face in this defeat. Indeed they won many admirers with their excellent style of football and never-say-die attitude that should be a lesson to others.

They had outstanding players in Brendan Walsh, Niall Mullane, Cormac O’Sullivan, Fergal Dorgan and Johnny Walsh while Paul Holland’s contribution of eight points from placed ball showed just how invaluable a good freetaker is to a team.

Bantry had the advantage of the strong wind in the opening half, but it was Clyda who started better and were well worth their 0-4 to 0-1 lead after 10 minutes with Fergal Dorgan involved in three of those points.

However, Damien O’Neill’s midfield influence was very apparent and using the long ball to great effect, the Blues were level at the end of the first quarter before O’Neill’s long delivery was misjudged by the Clyda defence which let Philip Clifford a clear run on goal and he made no mistake from close range.

Unfortunately Bantry’s rhythm was clearly upset by the injury to Andy O’Shea which happened shortly after their goal, and when play resumed five minutes later, Clyda took full advantage of the added time to score three points without replay to leave the sides deadlocked on 1-6 to 0-9 at the break.

Bantry took up the running on the change over and three points in a row with Damien O’Neill involved in all three, put them 1-9 to 0-9 in front and they went five in front by the end of the third quarter as Clyda turned the ball over through careless short passing in defence which ended in scores for the Blues.

However, the North Cork side refused to panic, and urged on by their huge following, they laid siege to the Bantry goal for the last 10 minutes scoring four points without replay.

As the tension became unbearable, Clyda kicked three wides in a row and had Brendan Walsh’s goal ruled out before time finally ran out.

Scorers — Bantry: J. Canty 0-5 (0-4 frees); P. Clifford 1-1; P. O’Rourke 0-2; S. McCarthy, D. O’Neill, D. Barron, P. Canty, G. Canty 0-1 each.

SOUTHERN STAR MATCH REPORT
Bantry Blues 1-13, Clyda Rovers 0-15

Bantry Blues were a very relieved side at the end of this gripping TSB county senior football championship clash with Clyda Rovers at Páirc Uí Rinn last Sunday.

Forced to relinquish control after opening up a 1-13 to 0-11 lead by the 47th. minute, the South West men were fortunate to hold out for a single point win as gallant Clyda squandered a number of chances in a thrilling conclusion.

Add in the fact that Clyda had a goal disallowed for a small square infringement, and it's easy to appreciate why Bantry were counting their blessings at the finish of a contest that proved hugely entertaining for the fair-sized attendance.

The pity was that the game, fought out in exemplary sporting fashion by two determined and accomplished sides, was marred by an incident towards the end of the first-half when Bantry's Andy O'Shea made an awkward tackle and sustained a broken leg.

Bantry's form in their opening two outings against Aghada and Avondhu had left a bit to be desired, but they still entered the fray as fairly warm favourites to account for a Clyda side that had enjoyed a good run last year before having their limitations exposed by Nemo Rangers in the semi-final.

There was little to indicate during the opening exchanges, however, that Bantry were ready to produce their best form, and Clyda, despite playing into a fresh breeze, were full value for an 0-4 to 0-1 lead after ten minutes.

In fairness, Clyda played some very good football early on, and their overall display provided ample evidence that they are now very much a force to be reckoned with at senior level.

Their bright start owed much to the strong play from Niall Mullane, veteran Mick O'Shea and Derry Cronin in the half back line, and to the impact made by Fergal Dorgan and especially John Walsh on the left flank of attack.

Once Gerdie Barry settled down to limit Dorgan's progress, however, the Bantry half back line, in which pivot Andy O'Shea and Padraig O'Regan were both on top of their game from the outset, managed to significantly reduce to service to Clyda's two-man full forward line of John Walsh, who proved quiet a handful for Niall Twomey, and Derek O'Brien, who made life a bit uncomfortable too for full back Tim O'Mahony.

And, with Eamonn McCarthy enjoying the better of his duel with Clyda's roaming corner forward, Paudie Mullane, Bantry steadily turned the tide as the first-half progressed.

After centre forward Sean McCarthy reduced the deficit with a good point in the 12th. minute, Bantry, with Jeremy Canty providing much of the inspiration at left corner forward, hit a purple patch which yielded three quick points and a cracking goal from Philip Clifford.

Clifford's chance came about after troubled Clyda corner-back, Tom Walsh, misjudged a probing delivery from Damien O'Neill, and the Bantry full forward underlined his potential when racing in from the left to unleash an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net.

That pushed Bantry 1-5 to 0-4 ahead after 17 minutes, but, remarkably, they added just a point to their tally for the rest of the first-half.

With Clifford kept on a tight rein by Clyda full back, Brendan Walsh, and Paul O'Rourke, Sean McCarthy, Eric Sheehan and Declan Barron also struggling to make headway up front, Bantry had good cause for concern in the second-quarter, especially since Damien O'Neill and Graham Canty, while they both had their moments, were unable to stamp their anticipated authority on the midfield proceedings.

The efforts of Barry, O'Shea, O'Regan and Eamonn McCarthy, however, ensured that Bantry held the whip-hand until O'Shea's tragic injury unsettled them nearing the interval.

Three points to the good at the time, Bantry had their lead erased before the short whistle, and Clyda went in at the break with their tails up.

It was Bantry who raised the tempo on the resumption, however, and two good points from Paul O'Rourke, which sandwiched another from Declan Barron, suggested that they might be ready to suppress the spirited Clyda challenge.

Although Clyda hit back with two scores from frees per wing-forward, Paul Holland, Bantry, boosted by improved play from Graham Canty at midfield, steadily grew in stature during the third-quarter.

Eamonn McCarthy, at full-back, Tim O'Mahony, at centre-back, and Padraig O'Regan were particularly effective as the restructured rearguard gained a firm grip, and Bantry, with Clifford and Jeremy Canty carrying the main threat in attack, eased smoothly into a five point lead with 13 minutes of normal time remaining.

But Clyda soon showed that they were in no mood to bow out tamely, and, with Padraig Mullane, who had been effectively policed by Bantry substitute Padraig Cremin after half-time, finally coming good as a third midfielder, they made a determined bid to salvage the game.

Mullane popped up here, there and everywhere as Clyda applied the bulk of the pressure in the last ten minutes, but they found it difficult to unhinge the Bantry defence, and they were still three points in arrears as stoppage time approached.

Clyda's admirable perseverance eventually brought results, however, as midfielder Cormac O'Sullivan, who held his own against Damien O'Neill over the hour, landed a good point before a silly late tackle allowed Paul Holland to cut the gap to the bare minimum from a free.

From the kick-out, Cormac O'Sullivan made a great catch to feed Fergal Dorgan, who floated in a high ball which was fisted past helpless Bantry custodian, Alan Farrelly, by recalled substitute, Tom McGlinchey.

Much to Bantry's delight, McGlinchey was penalised for a small square infringement, and Clyda's frustration was compounded when Paul Holland shot wide with an effort to level matters with time almost up.

Scorers – J. Canty 0-6, 0-4 frees, P. Clifford 1-1, P. O'Rourke 0-2, S. McCarthy, D. O'Neill, free, D. Barron and P. O'Regan 0-1 each. Clyda Rovers: P. Holland 0-9, 0-8 frees, J. Walsh 0-2, N. Mullane, F. Dorgan, D. O'Brien and C. O'Sullivan 0-1 each.

Bantry Blues: A. Farrelly, E. McCarthy, T. O'Mahony, N. Twomey, G. Barry, A. O'Shea, P. O'Regan, D. O'Neill, G. Canty, E. Sheehan, S. McCarthy, P. O'Rourke, D. Barron, P. Clifford, J. Canty. Sub. P. Cremin for O'Shea (injured).

CLYDA VICTORS OVER THE TOWN
........................................................................................................

On a very bad night for Football Clyda Rovers and Bishopstown served out a great Championship game to a Fair size crowd in Pairc Ui Rinn.Bishopstown were first off the mark with a good score by James O'Shea.Clyda's response was quick a 25 yard free converted by Paul Holland after some good work by Clyda captain Padraig O'Mullane.Scores were tit for tat untill Bishopstown got a lucky break. An akward high ball into the square some how ended up in the back of the Clyda Rovers net.The greasy conditions did not help Dermot Fitzgearld in the Clyda goal.Bishopstown added a further score to lead by 5 points and things looked very bad for the Clyda men.To make things worse Derek O'Brien had to go off with a mouth injury, and indeed his replacement Thagh O'Mullane was no more on 5 minutes when his ankle injury resurfaced. But Clyda are well known as a team that never dies without a fight, and there resolve would have to be tested.Points by Paudie Kissane and Paul Holland had the lead down to 3 points. Then a goal by John Walsh had the sides level as we faced the break. Both sides exchanged points before the break.
Bishopstown got off to a great start in the second half when they toke a lead of 2 points.Indeed a super save from Dermot Fitzgearld saved Clyda from going further behind. The next score would be vital.Clyda got a free on the 40, and Hollands shot fell short only for Paudie Kissane to punch the ball into the net Clyda had taken the lead.A pointed free by Bishopstown had the sides level once again and a grandstand finish looked on.The Clyda midfield of Sean Breen and Cormac O'Sullivan began to dominate ,with Padraig O'Mullane working hard Clyda were playing well. The sides were still level 1-10 to 2-7 with 10 minutes to go.Clyda however finished the stronger and points by Paul Holland and Niall O'Mullane had the score at 2-9 to 1-10.Clyda held out for a famous victory.

CORKMAN MATCH REPORT
Clyda advance in SFC after close battle with
Bishopstown

CLYDA ROVERS . .2-9

BISHOPSTOWN . 1-10

THIS was a very closely contested Co SFC game at Pairc Ui Rinn on
Saturday evening, played in wet conditions. Both sides adapted to the
conditions very well and the issue was in doubt right to the finish.

James O'Shea opened the scoring for Bishopstown in the first min. This
player was to be very effective all through. Clyda Rovers levelled through
Paudie Kissane in the 4th min. Clyda, now doing well, were a bit
inaccurate up front but had a pointed free by Paul Holland.

Padraigh O'Mullane was wide off the upright before Bishopstown forced
level in the 12th min through James O'Shea. Bishopstown were unlucky
not to goal in the 14th min when a free by James Murphy was punched
off the side netting by Robert Honohan.

Bishopstown had a goal in the 15th min when a good delivery by the
effective Kieran O'Donovan to Mark Cogan bounced over the line off
keeper Dermot Fitzgerald. A foul on Liam Honohan provided a pointed
free by James O'Shea shortly after, 1-4 to 0-2.

Padraigh O'Mullane, who was doing very well for Clyda, was narrowly off
target. Clyda then lost their full-forward Derek O'Brien through injury
and his replacement Tadgh O'Mullane only lasted a few minutes, having to
retire injured. However, the Mourneabbey side battled hard and a good
delivery by Mick O'Shea led to a point by Paudie Kissane after 21 mins,
1-4 to 0-3.

Niall O'Mullane was fouled going through and they had a pointed free by
Paul Holland to come within a goal. In the 26th min, a good delivery by
Paudie Kissane was finished to the net by John Walsh to force level at
1-4 each. Clyda edged ahead with a pointed free by Holland a minute
later.

In the dying moments, James Murphy made a great solo run before
parting to Liam Honohan who pointed and had the sides level at the
break at 1-5 each.

On the restart, Bishopstown, who introduced Donal Cullinane and
Anthony Buckley, were well on top. They had two early points by James
Murphy but Clyda regrouped and their half-back line won a lot of
possession and the midfield dominance of the Honohan brothers was
broken.

A quick free by Paul Holland was finished to the net by Paudie Kissane for
the lead at 2-5 to 1-7. Bishoptown forced level in the seventh min
through Robert Honohan and then good work by Cormac O'Sullivan to
Sean Breen saw O'Sullivan take the return pass and kick a fine point for
Clyda.

In the 40th min, James O'Shea forced level with a pointed free. Holland
edged Clyda ahead again but, in the 45th min, O'Shea kicked his sixth
and final point for Bishopstown.

Liam Honohan was wide from a free for Bishopstown before Paul
Holland edged the Avondhu side ahead again with six mins remaining. A
great interception by John Walsh, who moved outfield, broke up a
Bishopstown attack and, in the 58th min, it fell to Padraigh O'Mullane to
kick a powerful point after great work by Paul Holland, Cormac
O'Sullivan.

In the dying moments, Liam Honohan was wide for Bishopstown and
Martin Hayes was also off target in injury time. Clyda will now advance to
the third round while Bishopstown will meet Imokilly with the winners
back in the race for County championship honours.

SOUTHERN STAR MATCH REPORT
Clyda displayed steely resolve to shade Bishopstown
Clyda Rovers 2-9, Bishopstown
1-10
Although Bishopstown started brightly, they found Clyda Rovers,semi-finalists last year,
just a bit too hot to handle in a splendid TSB
county senior football championship first-round clash at Pairc ui Rinn on Saturday evening.
The city men, with Liam Honohan to the fore at midfield and corner forward James O'Shea quick to
make an impact up front, enjoyed much the better of the exchanges during the opening quarter, and were full value for a five point lead after 15 minutes.
Wing back Mark Cogan bagged the Bishopstown goal when, fed by excellent corner-back, Kieran O'Donovan, he lofted in a speculative delivery which caught Clyda custodian, Dermot Fitzgerald, off guard and trickled over the line.
A fortuitous score, indeed, but it was no more than Bishopstown deserved considering they had gone close to making a telling breakthrough just seconds
earlier when Robert Honohan hit the side-netting with a chance.A quick point from James O'Shea followed to make it 1-4 to 0-2, and the picture looked bright for Bishopstown entering the second-quarter.Typically, however, Clyda stuck to their task, and the dynamic play of ubiquitous wing forward, Padraig O'Mullane, proved a key factor as they gradually took the wind from Bishopstown's sails.Midfielders Paudie Kissane and Cormac O'Sullivan, and ace free-taker Paul Holland were others to spearhead a Clyda revival which enabled
them to earn equality, courtesy of an opportunist goal by corner-forward, John Walsh,in the 26th. minute.Paul Holland inched Clyda ahead from a free soon afterwards, but good work by James Murphy paved the way for an equalising score from Liam Honohan virtually on the stroke of half-time.Again Bishopstown made the better start in the second-half, with the impressive James Murphy shooting a couple of inspirational points to push them 1-7 to 1-5 ahead before Clyda 'keeper, Fitzgerald, produced
a great save to foil the ever-menacing James O'Shea.
But again Clyda displayed steely resolve to curb Bishopstown's momentum, and they looked ready to snatch the initiative after midfielder Paudie Kissane finished a Paul Holland free to the net in the 37th. minute. As things turned out, Clyda
weren't to fall behind again, but, after Robert Honohan quickly brought Bishopstown level, an absorbing duel for supremacy unfolded, and the teams were deadlocked at 2-7 to 1-10 as the last quarter dawned.Defences generally held sway in the remaining time, but Clyda made the better use of their chances in a nail-biting finish, with Paul Holland, from a free, and man-of-the-match Padraig O'Mullane landing the decisive scores for the Mourneabbey man inside the last five minutes.
To their credit, Bishopstown, who were best served overall by Kieran O'Donovan, Mark Cogan, Liam Honohan, James Murphy and James O'Shea, battled until the bitter end, but their hopes of saving the game were dashed when Liam Honohan and Martin Hayes failed to hit the target with a couple of good opportunities in stoppage time.

FERMOY . . . . . . . . 1-2
APPEARING in their first ever Avondhu Under 21 (A) FC final, Clyda Rovers made it a winning start on Saturday last when they easily accounted for Fermoy at Castletownroche.Except for a brief period late in the first half when Fermoy goaled, it always looked likely that Clyda Rovers were going to take the title. From the opening minutes, the winners dominated with Dylan O'Shea creating many problems at centre-forward for the Fermoy defence.O'Shea pointed in the first min. Fermoy levelled through Trevor Grumbridge two minutes later. A succession of Clyda points by 0'Shea (0-3 frees) and one from
Paudie Kissane (free) had the winners ahead by 0-5 to 0-1 at the end of the opening quarter.Fermoy suddenly were then back in the game when good work by Trevor Grumbridge and Sean McCarthyled to a goal by Shane O'Neill. Fermoy moved Michael Hurley to
midfield in a swop with Paul Howard.Clyda Rovers kicked a number of wides while Dermot Fitzgerald saved well from Simon Barry. In the 25th min, Derek O'Brien set up Paudie Kissane for a goal. This gave
the winners an interval lead of 1-6 to 1-1.
On the restart, Dylan O'Shea set up Edmund O'Connor for an early goal and Maurice O'Brien followed with a point. By now, Clyda were well in control in all sectors throughout the field, mainly the half-back line who were superb. The Mourneabbey side came
close to scoring a goal in the 40th min when
Donal O'Mullane and Derek O'Brien combined well for Edmund O'Connor who was denied at the vital moment by Richie Kelleher. Derek O'Brien pointed a minute later.By the end of the third quarter, Clyda had moved 2-10 to 1-1 ahead after points by O'Shea and
Cormac Murphy. The last quarter saw Clyda Rovers add points by Maurice O'Brien (3) and Paudie Kissane while Sean McCarthy completed the scoring with a Fermoy point in the 60th min.

Cork hurling stars Ben and Jerry O' Connor are to say no to a request from ambitious Clyda Rovers to play in the Cork Senior Championship next year.
Clyda approached the talented twins from Newtownshandrum in the hope that they would give the Avoundhu club."We were approached and we have been given fransfer forms" confirmed Ben, who captains the Cork Senior Hurlers this year."But to be honest we just would not have time to play football" added the Cork Star although Clyda are still believed to be holding out hope that the pair will have a change of heart.
"Between the club and the county there just would not be a way of fitting in football.
We are currently training 4 nights a week with the hurlers although that is likely to cut back to three next week.Football in Newtown has suffered as a result of the clubs remarkable success in hurling which has seen the small club become Corks dominant power winning 3 U21 titles in a row and a senior county.Despite winning a north Cork premier minor football title a few years New town are totaly commited to hurling. The O'Connor twins are highly regarded as footballers, and made a big impression on clyda a few years back, when they gave their defence a torrid time in a local under 21 match.
Clyda had a fairytale run in last years county championship reaching the county semi final before finally being eliminated by Nemo rangers
