Croke Park should be opened up to other sports
So it looks like the Bertie Bowl has bit the dust. It really was a massive blunder by our taoiseach the way he handled the whole staduim Ireland saga.
Firstly he put pressure on the FAI to abandon Eircom Park, which in reality i suppose the FAI would never have built but at least they had some vision with Bernard O'Byrne in charge. He was axed when Bertie finaly persuaded the FAI to join the bertie bowl. The IRFU were of course only too happy to get a free staduim with there dump that is lansdowne Road. So then that left the GAA. The GAA have at there disposal one of the best staduims in Europe, which is idol 6 months in the year. The GAA was all set at the 2000 congress to finaly give power to central congress to open Croke Park to other sports. Then the day before the vote good old Bertie gives 90 million pounds in grants. The vote failed by 1 in conterversial circumstances. Fast forward 2 years and we had Bertie scrambling for cover, the PD's had pulled the plug on the bertie Bowl, Euro 2008 bid was a joke, with Bertie pleading with the GAA to open Croker.
Now the Government has punished the GAA for not opening croke park by withdrawing 38 million of the grant promissed. Where does this leave the GAA?
The lenister hurling semi finals have been moved from Croke Park this year because, its costing too much to stage the matches there. This should be a wake up call for the GAA. Croke Park should be maximised to get the most revenue it can from hiring out this magnificent staduim. I believe every genuine ordinary member of a club, wants croke park to be made available, in the long run it will benefit the grassroots, by providing Extra money. April looks like major decision time for congress, and with a bit of luck and vision, Croker will be open to other sports soon.
